This past Saturday, April 21, 2018 was the annual tunnel tours underneath the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Public Square. The tours only happen once a year and are sponsored by the monument (not Tours of Cleveland). So as it stands now, if you missed it you’ll have to wait until 2019. I waited in line for two and half hours as over 1,000 people went underground to visit the tunnels.

First of all the tunnels are not haunted. Their main purpose to support the weight of the monument with it’s large sandstone blocks and huge bronze reliefs inside. They have served as a fall out shelter or tornado shelter as well as storage.

After going underground we emerged through a small staircase inside the monument. The inside is open most days and contains the names of the 9,000 Cuyahoga county residents who fought in the civil war, of which about 1,000 died. The monument is free and a must see in Public Square.
