Maria’s Field of Hope

Maria's Field of Sunflowers

Yesterday morning, I had the privilege of going out to Maria’s Field of Hope in Avon, OH. This 26 acre field full of sunflowers is inspired by the memory of a young girl named Maria McNamara. Maria passed away at age 7 due to brain cancer.

The field blooms in September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with five varietals of sunflowers. The Prayers for Maria Foundation helps raise awareness of childhood cancers and helps lead the fight to increase funding for research and hopefully one day end childhood cancers.

I went early in the morning. It was quiet and peaceful with very few people around. It was a lovely experience to walk through the rows of sunflowers as they were visited by the honeybees. I could hear the traffic whizzing by on the interstate but it was quite tranquil none the less. I highly recommend a visit to Maria’s Field of Hope while the flowers are in bloom!

In 2016 the sunflower was named the official flower of city of Avon! The filed is located at the corner of Chester and Jaycox Roads in Avon, just off I-90.
