Are you familiar with the Hermit Club? It is a bit of a secret here in Cleveland but chances are you passed by it. The Hermit Club “is the nation’s oldest continuously operating private club devoted to amateur performing arts”. It sits just behind Playhouse Square and is attached to the Hofbrauhaus.
The Hermit Club is host to a wide variety of events centered around the performing arts such as, concerts, plays, jazz pub parties, open mic nights, poetry readings and magic shows to name a few. It is a private club that does allow guests and hosts many open house events. Members are actively dedicated to serving the Cleveland-area community through these events, fundraisers and other activities that engage and entertain!
The Club was formed back to 1904 and organized by Cleveland architect Frank Bell Meade. The members expressed themselves with the production of musical entertainment, a tradition that carries on today. They would move into their current building on Dodge Court in 1928, which was designed by Meade.
