We having been looking at Lake View Cemetery over the past couple weeks. Today we look at a collection of some of the famous Clevelanders buried at the cemetery.
John D. Rockefeller – Rockefeller was of course the founder of Standard Oil, the largest corporation on the planet and the richest man on the planet in his lifetime. He went to public high school in Cleveland, attended church here, and lived in a mansion on Millionaire’s Row at Euclid Ave and E. 40th St. His obelisk is located in section 10 of the cemetery.
Levi Schofield – Schofield designed the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Public Square, his offices were located in the Schofield building on the corner of Euclid Ave and E. 9th St. He also designed the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, OH where “Shawshank Redemption” was filmed. The Schofield crypt is in section 1 across from Wade Chapel.
Garrett Morgan – Morgan was a Cleveland resident and inventor of the traffic light and gas mask. His gas mask would be used in 1916 to help save men trapped inside a tunnel underneath Lake Erie due to an explosion during construction of one of the water intake cribs that supply Cleveland with our drinking water. Morgan is buried, with his wife, in section 50 of the cemetery.
