On Saturday, April 27, 2019 the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Public Square will hold their annual underground tunnel tour! The tours only happen once a year and are sponsored by the monument (not Tours of Cleveland). The tours begin at 9:00 am and run to 4:00 pm. Be prepared to wait in line. Because this only happens once a year it is very popular.
First of all the tunnels are not haunted. Their main purpose to support the weight of the monument with its large sandstone blocks and huge bronze reliefs inside.
I did the tour in April 2018 and it was fun. They started with a little history about the monument and its creator Levi Schofield. They took us underground, where we checked out the tunnels and then emerged through a small staircase inside the monument. The inside contains the names of the 9,000 Cuyahoga county residents who fought in the civil war, of which about 1,000 died. The monument and the tunnel tour is free!
