Good news! This Saturday, April 21, 2018 the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Public Square will be offering free tours of the tunnels underneath the monument. The tours run from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday. You must be in line by 5:00 pm to get in before closing. The tunnels are only open to the public a couple times a year, so take advantage of this opportunity.
The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument was dedicated on July 4, 1894 to honor the 9,000 Cuyahoga County residents who fought in the Civil War. It was designed by Levi Schofield. Atop the monument stands a 15 foot statue of Lady Liberty, whom Schofield modeled after his wife, Elizabeth. You can visit the inside of the monument most days, where you can see the names of those who served the Union Army etched into the marble walls.
