Today we venture outside of Cleveland, on a little day trip to Sandusky, Ohio and the Merry Go Round Museum. The Merry Go Round Museum opened in 1990 inside the old post office in Sandusky. But the idea for the museum came about in 1988 when the post office issued a series of stamps featuring carousel animals. One of the animals featured was from Cedar Point’s Kiddieland Carousel. A ceremony was held at the old post office on the first day of issue. They hoped for a hundred people to come out but over 2,000 did and the idea was for the museum was born!
Today the museum houses an active carousel (circa 1939) that you can ride (included with admission), animals galore from all kinds of carousels from amusement parks and fairs and an active wood carving shop where you can watch artisans working on building an animal for a carousel.
This museum is a real hidden gem and I highly recommend stopping by if you are in Sandusky. Sandusky is about an hour west of Cleveland by car and is the home of Cedar Point as well.
